A Case of Liberal Amnesia

What I find the most fascinating about this whole issue of Parliament being prorogued by Stephen Harper is the apparent case of Liberal amnesia affecting some Canadians and most of the media.

Die-hard-I'll-support-anyone-as-leader-Liberals I can excuse for spewing forth over the top emotional temper tantrums about Harper destroying democracy by proroguing Parliament and the sound of women and children crying into their pillows at night for a Liberal government to return and make everything all better.  I expect no less, but what about other Canadians?  Has it been so long since Liberals governed Canada that average Canadians whom I would normally consider to be rational individuals, suddenly join Facebook groups and post comments on websites about the end of democracy in Canada as we know it AND how good we Canadians had it under a Liberal government.  Excuse me?  Did I miss something?

The sudden 10 point drop in the polls suggest to me that Liberal amnesia is indeed a reality and we Conservatives must remind Canadians whenever we can, how it really was under a Liberal government.  Did Liberals do everything wrong? No, I'm not so partisan in my thinking to be blinded to the facts.  I don't think Chretien to be the devil in disguise (I have his biography on my bookshelf actually), but when Canadians start getting misty eyed over memories of Liberal governments past, I take it very seriously.

Why is there no such thing as Conservative Amnesia?  You'd be hard pressed to find someone who will get misty eyed and tell you how much they long for a Conservative government like in the days of Mulroney.  Why do Conservative governments, no matter how many accomplishments they achieved, no matter what impressive legislation they brought forward, are remembered as the days of darkness?  We elect Conservative governments to punish Liberals for a while, we don't really want them to govern for long, just long enough for those Liberals to get their acts together, then we welcome them back with open arms, hugs and kisses.  Liberals really are after all, Canada's natural governing party... and so the rhetoric goes... except when I see and hear comments from Canadians lately over this proroguing of Parliament, I have to wonder....

Where is the moral outrage over the Liberals Ad-Scam and all the millions of dollars they have yet to return to tax payers?  Where was the outrage over all the other proroguing of Parliament from Liberal PM's like Chretien and Trudeau?  Oh right, those were special, different... Trudeau was way cooler than Harper could ever be anyways, right?  I don't get it.  "Tax us to the max!! Please!  We like when Liberals tax us to fund a million and one social programs, we like to bend over and take it up the tailpipe from Liberals.  It makes us happy and giddy.  But if Conservatives so much as look at us sideways, there will be hell to pay.  How dare they!"

All I ask is that if you come across some Canadians suffering from Liberal amnesia in your daily activities, be kind and remind them of how things really were.  And if you think you might be suffering from the effects of this due to the media's infection, take a few minutes and read a few Conservative blogs like Stephen Taylor, or google past proroguings of Parliament and that should clear things up for a while.  Feel free to rinse and repeat when necessary.  No nasty side-effects will occur, I promise.

Back Door Bob and the Side-Show media

It's just different when Stephen Harper prorogues Parliament... it's evil, it's undemocratic... so says the media.  Funny, when others did it, it was no biggie.

Trudeau- Prorogued Parliament 11 times
Chretien- 4 times (November 12, 2003 the House was prorogued for 4 1/2 months on the eve of the Liberal leadership convention)
Bob Rae (Back Door Bob as he's known in Ontario) the biggest loud mouth about Harper's proroguing the House, himself progued the Ontario legislature 3 times, at one point it was prorogued for  4 1/2 months.

Check out Christina Blizzard's column in today's Toronto Sun dishing back to Bob what he seems to love dishing out to everyone else while riding his high horse.

2010 Update

I realize its been a while since I have posted anything on this wonderful blog... I spent 3 weeks in Calgary with family and we're getting ready to welcome a new addition to our family on March 22!  Thankfully, things have slowed down at work, so I will be back to blogging very shortly.

2010 is going to be a great year!
