No Majority for Harper in the next federal election

Lefties cry that he's still a big bully with a mean ideological streak.... but the truth of the matter is he's not conservative enough (Quebec arena anyone?) As Kelly McParland writes, "Judging by the outcry over the arena, the Tory base has finally reached the limits of its willingness to hold its nose and compromise. It isn’t buying."  Unfortunately, Harper also isn't Liberal enough for the lefties, which leaves him in minority territory as the latest polls have indicated should there be an election anytime soon.

It is my own personal thinking, based on events in our country's electoral past, that if you can't win a majority the second time around, you ain't never gonna git it.  If you're a member of the Conservative party you've probably already received a letter telling you the absolute need for a majority in the next election, to which you've probably rolled your eyes and muttered "duh..." as you tossed it into the garbage, not to mention a phone call asking you donate money with the argument that the party needs enough money to wage a fantastic campaign in order to ensure a majority (my paraphrasing) as if money was really the key to winning a majority.  What this suggests to me is that if the party has to preach to its most loyal supporters about the need for a majority, the Conservative party must be more desperate than I thought.

As much as I admire some of the things Harper has done for the Conservative party and for Canada, I know that he won't be the leader to take us to the promised land of majority.  They can throw a pink sweater on him, get him to paint a Picasso while singing a Nana Mouskouri song... the left will never buy in.  As Popeye would say, "I am what I am," and who Harper is to the public is who he will continue to be.  The only exception would be if the Liberals did something really colossally stupid, but then, do we really want a PM who wins a majority by default?  I guess many out there would be happy with that, I don't know if I would be.  Truthfully, if Harper had just stuck to his original conservative agenda to tighten purse strings, get tough on crime, etc., and forget about trying to play both sides of the political fence, he would have at least won some admiration, even he didn't win any new votes.

Margaret Atwood at it again

Margaret Atwood has become a rather comical figure today after reading an article in the Globe about her brain wave to try and stop the Fox News North channel from going on the air.  Her argument is quite funny:

“But it shouldn't happen this way. It's like the head-of-census affair – gov't direct meddling in affairs that are supposed to be arm's length – so do what they say or they fire you.

“It's part of the ‘I make the rules around here,’ Harper-is-a-king thing,” she wrote.

First of all, Harper is Prime Minister in a MINORITY government in a democratic parliament and regarding a tv station that is supposed to be at arms length but isn't- that describes the CBC!!  Seems it's ok to have our tax dollars go towards paying for the left spewing it's biased, right-hating views, but it's down right evil to allow a conservative tv station... how undemocratic!
